NPMA holds Legislative Day 2024

Pest management professionals (PMPs) traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for the pest control industry at the National Pest Management Association’s (NPMA’s) Legislative Day event, held March 10-12.

The legislative issue at the forefront this year is pesticide preemption, which those in the pest control industry hope will be included in the next Farm Bill, a package of legislation primarily related to agriculture, food and farming. That’s because pesticide preemption would prevent localities from regulating pesticides, and instead ensure agencies with scientific expertise are tasked with evaluating whether a product is safe and effective. Oversight of pest control would be handled jointly by each state’s lead agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). If pesticide preemption is included in the next Farm Bill, it would reinforce the exclusive authority of states to regulate the sale, distribution and use of pesticides. Currently, Alaska, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Nevada do not have state-wide pesticide preemption laws.

Premier sponsor for Legislative Day is FMC. Strategic and key partners are Arrow Exterminators, BASF, Corteva Agriscience, Envu, MGK, Syngenta, Rentokil Terminix, Rollins and WorkWave. Sponsors are Control Solutions Inc., Douglas Products, FieldRoutes and Target Specialty Products.
