Pest control industry sales decelerate in May, Pest Index shows

Logo: PCO Bookkeepers & M&A SpecialistsThe total William Blair/PCO M&A Specialists Pest Index, a proprietary compilation of the monthly sales for 146 different U.S. pest control companies across 38 states, increased 10 percent year-over-year in May 2024, compared with 12 percent growth in April and 8 percent growth in March. The long-term historical growth rate of the total pest index is 11 percent.

“The pest index decelerated slightly in May, following a strong rebound in April,” said William Blair Equity Researcher Tim Mulrooney, noting the deceleration was primarily driven by a slowdown in the commercial pest and termite indices (residential remained steady at 12 percent growth). “Despite the modest deceleration in May, we still characterize the overall pest market as healthy, showing continued growth that is essentially in line with the long-term historical industry average.”

Dan Gordon, CPA, Pest Management Professional’s financial columnist and a partner in PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists, added, “While we are seeing marketing costs rise, we are also seeing best-in-class companies pay the additional marketing costs in order to grow. As we move into the warmer months, we should see continued growth for the rest of the year.”

The month’s results by segment include:

  • Residential Pest Index increased 12 percent year-over-year
  • Commercial Pest Index increased 11 percent year-over-year
  • Termite Index increased 6 percent year-over year
  • Bed Bug Index increased 9 percent year-over-year
  • Mosquito Index increased 9 percent year-over-year

About the William Blair/PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists Pest Index

The William Blair/PCO Bookkeepers & M&A Specialists Pest Index tracks the monthly performance of 146 privately held pest control companies across 38 states with combined annual 2023 revenue of $515 million. The purpose of the report is to track the monthly performance of several different U.S. pest markets. It does not include residential door-to-door companies.

In2Care: Mosquito Station

IMAGE: IN2CARE

IMAGE: IN2CARE

Introduced in 2017, the patented In2Care Mosquito Station is made of durable, recycled plastic and uses water with an odor lure to attract egg-laying Aedes and Culex mosquito species. Once inside, the mosquitoes contact the specially treated gauze near the water surface and become contaminated with a larvicide and a fungus. This exclusive “autodissemination” technique exploits the fact that Aedes and Culex mosquito species like to divide their eggs over multiple sites. By letting them fly out of the station while carrying larvicide on their legs, they transport the larvicide and contaminate several breeding sites around the station.

The In2Care Mosquito Station is approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). At press time, it is registered in all states except Alaska. The stations can be placed and then maintained every four weeks using refill sachets. They can be used as a standalone or in combination with other mosquito control methods. Each station features:

• A durable 5-liter water reservoir
• A lid with click-on mechanism
• A floater to carry the gauze strip
• Green time indicator cap (used as a servicing reminder)
• Optional securing tools
• Refill sachets (gauze, bioactives and attractant tablets)

The stations are currently available in the US from Veseris, Target Specialty Products and SiteOne Landscape Supply. A weekly webinar, “In2Care Stewardship Course: Deployment, Servicing and Commercialization of the In2Care Mosquito Station” is available for new users as well as a refresher course for seasoned users.

July FMC webinar focuses on pest identification

FMC’s latest installment of the FMC True Champions First Friday webinar series, titled “Pest Identification,” will review the principles of arthropod morphology and the basics of insect identification. It will take place July 12 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern hosted by Brian Mount, BCE — technically the second Friday of the month, because of the July Fourth holiday. The course will cover a broad selection of pests, their general appearance and characters useful in their identification. With each pest discussed, the course will zero in on control considerations and pest biology.

Brian Mount

Brian Mount

Mount received his master’s degree in entomology May 2007 from the University of Nebraska with a focus in urban entomology after he completed an undergraduate degree in business administration/management at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., in May 1994. Mount then received his Board Certified Entomologist (BCE) designation in 2007.

Mount began working in the pest control industry in 1995 through a management training program for a large pest control company where he spent 2 years. He then moved to become the sales and training manager for a smaller company where he spent 3 years doing hands-on pest and termite work. From 2000-2010, Mount worked for FMC in a technical service role. His varied experiences with FMC have given him a unique insight into the types of issues, both positive and negative, that pest professionals face daily.

From 2006-2010, Mount broadened his responsibilities as a field technical service representative for the Western U.S. where he was responsible for working insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. This gave him the opportunity to work with university researchers on to develop new product trials, write protocol, seek advice and create relationships across the Western U.S. From 2011-2013, Mount took on the role of turf market specialist in Florida.

Mount now serves as the urban product development lead at FMC Professional Solutions.

As with all FMC First Friday webinars, “Pest Identification ” is free to attend; however, only FMC True Champions members can receive continuing education unit (CEU) credits. At press time, approved states for CEU credit are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Michigan Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Registration for the webinar is now available.

Bird-X: Custom-cut BirdNet

IMAGE: BIRD-X

IMAGE: BIRD-X

Bird-X offers comprehensive bird netting options for every project. BirdNet is available in a range of sizes and colors to accommodate commercial and residential applications. The manufacturer will provide custom-cut netting to fit your precise area and dimensions. With custom-cut netting, you can streamline the installation process, save time and eliminate on-site cutting and waste, making installation faster and easier.

About Bird-X

Bird-X is celebrating 60 years in the bird control industry. On Jan. 17, 1964, the Elmhurst, Ill.-based manufacturer began its journey to becoming a supplier of humane bird control products. Bird-X started as a small idea, starting with a Bird Lite (today known as the Bird Strobe Light) that was being sold to deter birds from commercial areas.

“My father started this business with a Bird Lite, a chemical bird repellent, and an ultrasonic bird repeller,” recalls Bird-X Sales Director Joe Seid, son of company founder Richard Seid. “No one in the world had anything like that in 1964. They were revolutionary go-to-market products in the bird control industry.”

In the beginning, Bird-X was a single-employee business that was entirely operated by Richard Seid. The company spent the first 28 years selling innovative bird control products via trade publications. Readers responded to the ads in these publications and Bird-X sold bird control products directly to the end user.

“In its early years, it was less than a mom-and-pop operation,” Richard Seid said in the news release. “It started with one employee — me — and I was all job descriptions, from president to shipping clerk to phoneanswering person. With growth, we added administrative help, then production oversight, then sales and promotion, bookkeeping, etc.”

In 1992, Joe Seid joined the family business as the company’s 10th employee and strategically expanded sales channels. This was the start of a major growth period for the company. Throughout years of a dedicated online presence, combined with a knowledgeable team of bird control sales specialists, Bird-X has become a time-tested leader in the bird control industry.

Now, Bird-X supplies a growing product line of over 400 humane bird control solutions used in over 60 countries around the world, with a seasoned staff — 20 percent of which have been a part of the company for more than 25 years and have directly contributed to the tremendous growth and success.

This year, Bird-X is celebrating its success, the employees who helped the company get there and the customers who are part of this journey. Bird-X invites people to celebrate with the company throughout 2024 by following Bird-X on social media: FacebookTwitterInstagramLinkedIn and YouTube.

Using essential oil formulations to cover fly pheromones

Nature-Cide

Greg Pettis

Greg Pettis

As a PMP, I have been in situations where I did all the right things to control flies. I found the food source. I identified harborage sites. But I still had difficulty shutting down reoccurrences thanks to fly pheromones — even after food sources were cleaned up.

What fixed this problem was simply applying appropriately labeled, professional essential oil formulations to not only reduce the “attraction action” by covering up the pheromones, but also using the repelling nature of the product itself. Whether a dumpster, the outside back door area of a commercial kitchen (for fruit flies, blow flies and house flies), or areas around eaves and chimney peaks (for cluster flies), I could reduce the time it took to shut down fly issues using IPM protocols and green products registered in the 25(b) category, considered minimum risk through the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Temperature and time may affect ant management

Being able to find food faster than your competitor is a key to survival, and I would argue there are few insects on Earth better at this than ants. One component to their success is the ability to search for food when others cannot.

Some ant species are known as “thermal specialists,” meaning they can tolerate extreme temperatures that would kill other insects. For example, a handful of desert-dwelling ants in the genus Cataglyphis have evolved ways to tolerate surface temperatures as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit when foraging. While not as extreme, the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) similarly relies on a comparatively high temperature tolerance to forage during peak daytime temperatures when other ant species may be forced to find cover until temperatures cool down.

Photo: Kaan Sezer / iStock / Getty Images Plus / Getty Images

Photo: Kaan Sezer / iStock / Getty Images Plus / Getty Images

Another way that ants gain a competitive edge is by foraging for resources at different times of day, when rivals are not active. This process, known as “temporal niche partitioning,” is one way some ants have evolved to be nocturnal hunters while others are active in the morning or afternoon. By dividing the day into different periods of activity, ants avoid competing with all other species in their area at the same time in a mad rush for food.

When you consider how temperature and time influence ant activity together, it becomes easier to understand the highs and lows of seasonal ant activity. More important, understanding what drives these changes will better prepare you to adjust your ant management program as seasons change.

So, the next time you find yourself up against an ant problem you can’t get a handle on, take the time to review the foraging behavior of your target species to make sure your inspection efforts and control strategies align with their daily and seasonal activity.

FMC: Endius Cockroach Gel Bait

IMAGE: FMC

IMAGE: FMC

Combating cockroaches can be a challenge, especially because they tend to prefer spaces in proximity to people and food-handling establishments. The latest FMC innovation, Endius Cockroach Gel Bait, was developed for use in human-centric environments to deliver effective cockroach control without impacting health or property. This trademarked bait was engineered to complement existing food-handling pest control solutions so that pest management professionals (PMPs) have another option for multiple cockroach species control. It incorporates seamlessly and offers several key features.

Endius includes an exclusive bait matrix made from an exclusive mix of carbohydrates, palatable proteins and sugars. This combination has been shown in product trials to consistently attract four times more cockroaches than other products, the company says, ensuring the active ingredient, indoxacarb, can efficiently achieve control.

In addition to being effective and attractive to cockroaches, Endius is also built to offer user-friendly treatment for PMPs. The syringe is constructed with ultraviolet (UV)-resistant materials to ensure long-lasting potency, even in harsh environments and high temperatures. The bait itself sustains high and low temperatures as well, remaining stable and palatable in nearly any condition. Applications of Endius are also designed to be easy, efficient and mess-free, with its smooth viscosity to optimize placement as it comes out of the tube.

As with any FMC product, Endius offers the additional bonus of comprehensive support from the FMC team. This includes extensive resources such as training and technical support to ensure the best results on every application.

4 steps for long-term success with fly control

Syngenta

Lisa Eppler

Lisa Eppler

Flies can pose serious health risks, capable of spreading diseases like Salmonella and E. coli. Therefore, effective fly control is essential in residential, commercial and agricultural settings to maintain a clean environment and help prevent the spread of diseases.

Follow these four steps to help ensure successful fly management:

1. Identification. Knowing the species’ unique characteristics can help you implement effective control measures.

2. Prevention. Sealing cracks, installing screens on windows and doors, and using fly traps are all effective exclusion techniques.

3. Sanitation. Recommend your customers practice proper waste management, clean up spills promptly and keep food covered.

4. Insecticide treatments. Liquid insecticides and fly baits can be effective in controlling fly populations when used according to
their labels.

Fly control isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Embracing these practices can help ensure long-term success with fly control.

Liphatech collaborates on NYC rodent program

NYCHA technicians recently completed three days of classroom and in-the-field pest management training with Liphatech, including the treatment of active rodent burrows at a NYCHA development with the IGI CO₂ system. PHOTO: LIPHATECH

The New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA’s) Pest Management Unit has partnered with Milwaukee, Wis.-based manufacturer Liphatech for rodent control, education, solutions and support. Fifty-five NYCHA technicians are now trained in the use of IGI Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Powered by Liphatech. IGI CO₂ is a trademarked, alternative solution registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for controlling burrowing rodents in municipal areas, including next to occupied buildings.

This collaborative partnership was initiated and coordinated with New York City Director of Rodent Mitigation Kathleen “Rat Czar” Corradi and Edwin Arroyo, program manager for NYCHA’s Pest Management Unit.

“More than just a pillar area of the 2019 HUD Agreement, pests represent a significant challenge in NYCHA’s mission to provide decent, affordable housing to public housing residents,” NYCHA Vice President of Pest Management Josephine Bartlett said in a Liphatech news release. “We are investing in more efficient equipment and are using more effective methods to address pests across the portfolio. We remain extremely dedicated to addressing pest concerns at NYCHA developments, and ultimately improving the quality of our residents’ lives.”

NYCHA staff learn how to treat active rodent burrows at a NYCHA development using Liphatech’s IGI CO₂. PHOTO: LIPHATECH

A technical team from Liphatech, the provider of IGI CO₂ and a leading manufacturer of rodent control products, recently led and completed the three-day training with the technicians. It included classroom pest management continuing education units (CEUs) and in-the-field live training with the IGI CO₂ system, with technicians treating active rodent burrows at a NYCHA development.

Liphatech’s IGI CO₂ gas is approved for use in municipal, residential, commercial and field settings. It is non-flammable, invisible and odorless and is an effective solution that works quietly underground to get rid of harmful rodents by treating the burrows where they live.

“Every NYCHA technician was trained with the IGI CO₂ system. The response to the system was overwhelmingly positive and the efficacy was apparent when a return visit to the site showed a significant reduction in rodent activity around the burrows we treated,” Barry Pitkoff, Liphatech’s Northeast technical manager in the U.S., said in the news release.

About Liphatech

With U.S. headquarters based in Milwaukee, Wis., Liphatech is a worldwide manufacturer of pest control products. It is considered to be the developer of three of the industry’s active ingredients: chlorophacinone, bromadiolone and difethialone. The company was founded in France in 1946 io develop anticoagulants for the treatment of heart patients. It developed chlorophacinone in the 1960s and branded it as Rozol, a family of products that includes grain and pelleted products for field and structural use, and a tracking powder for use in and around structures. In the 1970s, Liphatech developed bromadiolone, its original second-generation rodenticide active ingredient.

The innovations continued with the opening of its U.S. facility in 1987. Research there and in Europe resulted in the discovery of difethialone during the late 1980s, with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registration as an active ingredient in 1995.

Steps to prevent pests from entering homes or businesses

Envu

Matt Remmen

Matt Remmen

PMPs can treat flies and other outdoor invaders with sprays and baits, but to prevent callbacks, it’s important to educate customers about steps they can take to keep pests from entering their homes or businesses. Other tips for effective control include:

▶ Eliminate attractive odors. Whether it’s from the grill, the trash or the dog, flies are attracted to smells. Remind customers to be vigilant about keeping the property maintained both inside and outside.

▶ Keep the pests outside. Explain to customers that flies are always looking for ways to come inside. While it’s tempting to let in the nice weather this time of year, the way to keep flies out of the house is to keep screens in place and doors shut. If windows do not have screens, customers should keep the windows sealed.

▶ Pay attention to the surrounding areas. Oftentimes, flies will wander onto the property from nearby sources. Look beyond the immediate property for places where flies might originate, such as a farm or restaurant. If a property is near these sources, customers can work with adjacent home and business owners to mitigate flies, so everyone wins.

Easing customer concerns

As bed bug awareness escalates, professionalism, education and compassion help alleviate customer anxiety.

Bed bugs have been a revenue generator for pest management professionals (PMPs) for decades. But when public awareness of Cimex lectularius skyrocketed late last year thanks to highly publicized infestations in Paris, France, the public’s fear of these blood-sucking pests seemed to escalate.

News reports and social media posts did little to alleviate anxiety about bringing home bed bugs, regardless of whether they were heading to the city for Paris Fashion Week, the Rugby World Cup or this year’s Summer Olympics. That bed bugs are adept at hitchhiking a ride home from public places — theaters, hospitals, hotels, subways, airports — on shoes, clothes, luggage, purses and backpacks appeared to be a revelation.

“There is no shortage of hysteria regarding bed bugs on the internet, particularly social media, and with the hysteria comes ineffective do-it-yourself (DIY) treatments,” says Mantis Pest Solutions Training Manager Alex McCurter. The Lee’s Summit, Mo.-based company does its part to educate prospective customers. It includes on its website detailed information about what prospective customers can expect during a bed bug service call and assures them PMPs will get the job done.

Share your expertise

Pest Management Professional’s (PMP’s) 2024 Bed Bug Management Supplement shows 53 percent of respondents expect bed bug jobs in 2024 to increase this year over last year. In addition, 72 percent of those asked say their company pricing is based on the severity of each customer’s infestation.

PMPs say infestations often get out of hand because people don’t understand bed bug biology and behavior. Sometimes, people don’t realize they’re dealing with bed bugs and attempt to eradicate the infestation themselves, with no luck. Or they ignore the bed bugs when they discover them in their homes and make the problem worse by not taking immediate action and seeking professional help.

Fortunately, many of the recent news stories about bed bugs advised those who have them to contact pest control companies. Word is getting out that PMPs are trained to develop comprehensive treatment plans that can be implemented without spreading the infestation. PMPs achieve success when they employ an integrated past management (IPM) strategy and rely on a combination of management methods such as vacuuming, inspection, monitoring, and heat and chemical treatments to target bed bugs at all stages of their life cycle.

In addition, PMPs are experienced sleuths who know where bed bugs prefer to hide. They know better than to limit treatment to beds and bedrooms. Training and hands-on experience teach PMPs that bed bugs often are found throughout a home, especially when customers seek a bug-free place to sleep in another room of the house.

Finally, identifying the species is critical, even with bed bugs. “Other Cimex species can be very difficult to distinguish from bed bugs,” McCurter says. “If the identification is wrong, treatment is likely to fail.”

Address customer concerns

Customers with bed bugs require additional education and care, PMPs who took our survey say. Customer service training is just as important as knowing bed bug biology.

Brett Lieberman

Brett Lieberman

“While eliminating customers’ bed bug problems is obviously critical, how we do it is equally important,” says Brett Lieberman, owner of My Pest Pros in Vienna, Va. “It’s not just the treatment, but the customer service.”

Educating customers while offering empathy, compassion and education is crucial. “We often have to play therapist and also provide cleaning and laundry advice in addition to pest management services,” Lieberman adds. “Technicians may be good at eliminating the pest issue; however, the best technicians — and customer service representatives — are the ones who provide education and compassion.”

Scott Hornemann, ACE, agrees. The field training, quality and safety director for Adam’s Pest Control in Medina, Minn., notes it’s imperative to hire capable technicians who also care and understand the psychological reasons needed to get bed bugs under control for customers.

“Given the psychological issues that anyone who has had a bed bug infestation creates, technicians need to be able to deal with people on a personal level more than any other pest service,” he adds. “They will encounter depression, fear, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from customers.”

Hornemann says Adam’s Pest Control seeks technicians who meet certain requirements before they are hired or during the training process:
1. Can they empathize with the situation? We are in business to help people, not just treat the pest.

2. Can they communicate in a way that puts customers at ease, and still give them the facts while being compassionate?

3. Will the things they see and feelings they experience be too much for them to handle?Like it or not, we take these situations home with us every night.

Scott Hornemann

Scott Hornemann

“We are up front with what this position entails — not only the physical aspect of doing the job, but the situations they will see and encounter,” Hornemann adds. “It is never easy to find technicians to fit this mold, but the good thing is that is who we are at Adam’s Pest Control, and I feel our culture attracts this type of person.”

For many pest control companies, effective bed bug management includes addressing the mental health issues customers may be experiencing. The stigma of having bed bugs is very real for many customers, and compassionate technicians are key to putting customers at ease. Many people isolate themselves from others because they are ashamed. Or they stop socializing to prevent spreading the pests to others. Education helps customers understand that bed bugs are interested only in a bloodmeal and do not care whether a person is rich or poor, or clean or dirty.

Prospective customers are relieved once they understand they will be able to resume their normal lives. “Most people assume the presence of bed bugs is somehow a sign of being ‘unclean’ and are understandably eager to resolve the situation,” McCurter points out.
Many people also do not understand that bed bugs do not transmit disease. Sharing the facts from reliable sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov), will help alleviate any fears of becoming ill customers may have.

Stop the spread

Asking a customer where they think they picked up bed bugs will help stop the spread in the community. It’s common for travelers to bring them back from a hotel stay or airport lounge. But the presence of bed bugs at a local school or hospital can be problematic if the customer continues to visit that location. Pest control companies may gain work if they alert the source to the pest problem. But proceed with caution; the customer may be looking for someone to blame.

Alex McCurter

Alex McCurter

“Often, a customer has a relative or friend that introduced the infestation. Offering bed bug control services to them can help stop a reinfestation,” McCurter says, adding, “Most customers seem to be fairly confident they know where the infestation came from, and are eager to refer that source for treatment.”

To help stop their spread, educate customers on how to prevent bringing home bed bugs. Hire technicians who understand that the stigma associated with these pests make getting infestations under control critical.

“Train technicians to do a thorough and proper job, but teach them that their work impacts people,” Hornemann concludes.

IMAGE: TECHNICIDE

IMAGE: TECHNICIDE

Technicide presents the Techni-Baiter rodent bait station, which it describes as “a revolutionary advancement in mouse trap technology.” This innovative solution is ideal for universities, warehouses, manufacturing plants, farms and other facilities where maintaining numerous rodent bait stations is traditionally time-consuming and labor-intensive. Key features include:

  • 15-20 seconds routine service time per station
  • Easy access with key attachment for extension poles or broomsticks
  • Four bait compartments: one exposed, three airtight for easy storage and replacement
  • Serviceable from a standing position, reducing physical strain
  • Compatible with snap traps for non-baiting strategies
  • Cuts labor costs by an estimated 75 percent
  • Enhances technician morale by simplifying routine tasks

About Technicide

With its manufacturing facilities based in Heber City, Utah, Technicide was founded in 1989 by Jim Harper, a third-generation pest management professional (PMP). Harper grew up in the pest control industry, riding along with his dad at a very young age. At 15, Harper’s responsibility in the family business was to maintain and repair the equipment. His inventive spirit led him to build a truck-mounted power rig that could slide out of the truck. In 1985, the family business expanded to new heights, offering its services into the restaurant pest elimination market. Harper began designing and building more sophisticated equipment — the Injecticide and the Techniduster — to meet the service needs.

Technicide, with its first product introduced in 1989, has been serving the pest control industry for over 35 years. The current flagship product, Exacticide, was introduced in 2001. The Exacticide, a multi-faceted pest eradication tool, is so versatile that you literally can do the majority of your jobs from start to finish with it, the company says. Although the name “Exacticide” has stayed the same, Harper has continued to improve it and implement greater features over the years. He has also created the Tech-Reach Bait Pro and Techni-Baiter rodent bait station, among other products.

Caffiene experiment poses new strategies for ant control

Recent research reveals that doses of caffeine can influence and enhance ants’ behavior, leading to faster foraging efficiency.

Like humans, caffeine influences behavior and physiology in animals and even helps to improve cognitive functions, like memory and learning, in bees.

Photo: UCLA/Dr. Noa Pinter-Wollman

Photo: UCLA/Dr. Noa Pinter-Wollman

Inspired by caffeine-related findings, Dr. Henrique Galante, a computational biologist at the University of Regensburg, investigated the effects of caffeine on the notoriously invasive and meddlesome Argentine ant (Linepithema humile). Galante hoped his findings could potentially uncover new methods for managing the species.

In his experiment, Dr. Galante used a LEGO drawbridge and tasked the ants to navigate a testing platform in order to reach a sugary reward, conveniently laced with varying levels of caffeine.

With the assistance of an automated tracking system, researchers paid attention to the ants’ speed, path directness and foraging time.

This video shows how an ant was tracked. Credit: Henrique Galante

The researchers found ants given low to intermediate doses of caffeine (25 and 250 parts per million) became more efficient in their tasks. However, while the ants didn’t move faster, they instead took more direct paths, implying the ants are more focused on where they’re going when they ingest caffeine.

With the caffeine, ants reduced their time spent foraging by 28 percent with low caffeine levels and 38 percent with high caffeine levels.

Tramp ants, such as this Argentine ant, are invasive species capable of forming large colonies. (Photo: Heather Broccard-Bell/iStock / Getty Images Plus/Getty Images)

The discovery, the research team said, has potential to revolutionize pest control by limiting the time its takes for the ants to find the bait and lay pheromone trails as they go and come back. Hence, the ants will spread the pesticide into the colony before realizing it’s effects.

Currently, researchers are conducting field tests in Spain to analyze the effectiveness of caffeine-laced bait in natural settings. Further, they are investigating the relationship and interactions between caffeine and the bait active ingredient in order to assess the real-world possibilities of their findings.

Looking ahead, the research concludes pest control professionals could potentially mold insect behavior by incorporating caffeine into strategies.

Aprehend: Post-Treatment Door Hangers

IMAGE: APREHEND

IMAGE: APREHEND

Successful bed bug treatment requires client cooperation, both before treatment and after. This handy Aprehend post-treatment door hanger helps to set customer expectations and reduce callbacks. Fewer callbacks means more profit.

The “Keys to a Successful Treatment” door hanger is free to Aprehend professionals. Available in English, Spanish and French, it can be used as a post-treatment door hanger or a leave-behind,; it can also be used as a pre-treatment instructional tool. It details customer do’s and don’ts following your service, and helps to communicate behaviors they need to avoid for optimal success.

Most callbacks are attributed to client error. Often unknowingly, client behaviors counteract professional pest management treatments. For example, using over-the-counter sprays post-treatment, failing to regularly launder bedding, or not maintaining normal sleep routines. The door hanger illustrates easy and common suggestions for success. They’re especially helpful in multi-unit housing, long-term-care facilities, and hospitality (slide it under the door for anonymity, if necessary). There’s a space for the technician to indicate the re-entry time, assisting with documentation requirements.

ConidioTec offers other free perks for Aprehend professionals, too — enjoy homeowner referrals via the Aprehend Professional Locator map, Aprehend e-brochures customized with your logo and contact information, non-branded printed brochures, and more. ConidioTec also offers free live zoom training for your team, which can be customized to meet your needs. Or, watch the training series at your convenience on the Aprehend Channel on YouTube. Mitigate risks of fly infestations & prevent food safety violations

Zoëcon

Mel Whitson, Senior Field Technical Service Manager, Zoëcon Professional Products

Mel Whitson

Flies of various species are notorious vectors for more than 100 pathogens, posing significant risks to food safety and public health. With rising temperatures and increased rainfall in many regions, PMPs can expect to see a surge in fly-related issues.

To effectively combat fly problems, implement targeted strategies to identify and eliminate breeding grounds. This involves meticulous examination of refuse areas, ensuring proper waste management practices are in place to minimize attractants for flies. Additionally, focusing on areas where organic materials decompose, such as compost heaps or decaying vegetation, can help disrupt the fly life cycle and prevent fly population growth.

Emphasize the importance of sanitation and hygiene measures to clients, educating them on proactive steps to reduce fly attractants and breeding sites on their properties. By addressing these key areas and implementing comprehensive fly management protocols, you can mitigate the risks associated with fly infestations and safeguard against potential food safety violations.

Fly prevention starts outside the home

Ensystex

Headshot: Dennis Neal, Technical Representative, Ensystex

Dennis Neal

Growing up on a dairy farm, I’ve battled the relentless nuisance of flies. Prevention starts outside the home, especially with pet waste — eliminating this breeding ground is crucial.

Another common residential source is bird feeders. Birds and bats are natural predators of flies, and many homeowners place bird houses and feeders around their homes without realizing their role in pest management. By educating homeowners to regularly change birdseed, we can deter flies effectively.

Simple actions like these can make a significant difference in fly reduction, improving the quality of life for your customers. As someone intimately familiar with the battle against flies, you should urge your residential accounts to take proactive steps in controlling these pests and become partners in prevention.
