Insects Limited is offering a two-day workshop about integrated pest management (IPM) in museums and historic houses. The workshop will be held March 11-12 at Insects Limited’s main office in Westfield, Ind.

Co-taught by a pest management professional and a conservator, this workshop is appropriate for a range of museum, library, and archive professionals including conservators, facility staff, collection managers, registrars, librarians, and archivists.

The workshop will introduce participants to multiple aspects of IPM, including policy and procedure, preventing infestation, trapping and monitoring, remedial treatment, and basic pest identification.

Participants will learn to:

  • identify stakeholders in their institutions that can help set up a successful IPM program
  • identify which policies and procedures set the groundwork for successful implementation
  • survey a building envelope and collection areas to identify locations vulnerable to entry and infestation
  • determine the types and placement of traps to monitor collection areas
  • identify common museum pests
  • work effectively with a pest management professional

Pat Kelley, president of Insects Limited, and Rachael Perkins Arenstein, a partner in A.M. Art Conservation LLC (a private practice in the New York area specializing in preventative care), will lead the workshop.

Kelley has over 30 years of experience in professional pest management and is a board-certified entomologist. He currently heads the IPM strategies for several large museums and performs training and lecturing for museums and historic houses in the United States and Europe. He is the Chair of the Identification Aids subgroup for the Integrated Pest Management Working Group.

Perkins Arenstein has implemented and conducted IPM programs in institutions of various sizes in the United States and abroad. She is a founding member and current Co-Chair of the Integrated Pest Management Working Group.

The workshop costs $295 and includes breakfast pastries, coffee, drinks and snacks. Lunches and dinners are not included.
