May marks the start of mosquito season, but as overall temperatures rise across the nation, these pests are starting to emerge sooner, and for longer periods, than in previous years.

Ahead of the upcoming mosquito season, Terminix, a Rentokil Terminix company, identified the Top 50 mosquito-infested cities in the U.S. along with some proactive tips to help better protect customers this season.

The list, generated using Terminix service data from 2023, focuses on key metropolitan areas. Although these cities were pinpointed based on Terminix service data, any area that experiences seasonal temperatures above 55 degrees Fahrenheit is at risk of mosquito activity, with coastal regions and areas prone to higher humidity being the most vulnerable.
To help people “fight the bite” of mosquitoes, Dr. Sydney Crawley, principal vector scientist for Terminix, recommends these tips for pest management professionals to tell their customers:
- Defend – Use an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved insect repellent according to label directions. To be most effective, repellents should contain at least 20 to 30 percent DEET. The higher the percentage of DEET in a product, the longer it will last. If possible, avoid peak mosquito-biting hours. Some mosquitoes are most active in the hours from dusk to dawn, and others bite more frequently during the day. Depending on the mosquitoes present in your area, take extra precautions if you are outside during peak biting times.
- Dress – Extra precautions that may help you avoid being bitten include wearing lighter color clothing as lighter colors are less attractive to mosquitoes than darker colors. Long sleeves, long pants and socks are recommended when near water or heavily wooded areas. It’s important to note that some repellents work best on the skin, and others may perform best when applied directly to clothing.
- Drain – Mosquitoes can breed in as little as one tablespoon of water so draining all forms of standing water is imperative to mosquito control. Drain any standing water and clean out gutters and drains to ensure they are free-flowing. Be mindful of yard adornments like fountains, birdbaths, and flower pots, as they often collect water. Be sure to regularly overturn and drain any containers holding stagnant water around the house at least once weekly.
