Managing stinging insects such as bees and wasps requires knowledge, strategy and caution to ensure the safety of both the pest management professional (PMP) and the surrounding environment. Here are four pointers for safely and successfully managing stinging insect pests:

  1. Learn how to identify and distinguish various wasp and bee types. Knowing what you’re dealing with will help you locate the nest and inform your management approach.
  2. Assess the extent of the activity and any potential risks associated with it. For example, consider the proximity to sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals or homes. Pay attention to weather conditions to determine whether application is appropriate.
  3. Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize the risk of stings. Additionally, avoid wearing fragrant products that could be attractive to bees and wasps.
  4. Time your treatments. Consider conducting treatments during early morning or late evening, when stinging insects are less active and more likely to be inside the nest.
