3 steps to help PMPs stave off mosquito populations

Managing mosquito populations proactively is key to helping people enjoy a safe summer season. Here are three steps to help PMPs effectively stave off mosquito populations in their surroundings.

1. Inspect the property. Begin with a thorough inspection of the property. Look for conditions that create pockets of stagnant water — a mosquito breeding ground. Address areas with poor drainage, clogged gutters or containers that collect rainwater.

2. Apply larvicides. When stagnant water is identified, the next step is to apply larvicides. These specialized treatments target mosquito larvae in their breeding sites, preventing them from developing into adult mosquitoes. This proactive measure disrupts the mosquito life cycle, significantly reducing their numbers and potential for infestation.

3. Apply an insecticide. Create a protective barrier around the property using a long-lasting residual insecticide. Apply this treatment to foliage and structures where mosquitoes seek shelter and rest. By treating shaded areas, PMPs can effectively target areas where mosquitoes are likely to congregate, ensuring a more comprehensive control strategy.

It is also helpful to communicate to customers what they can do to help, specifically:

  • Maintain a clean and clear exterior landscape to prevent future mosquito development.
  • Identify and manage problem areas such as excess foliage and standing water.
