The Small Business Administration (SBA) Rhode Island District Office has named Brian Goldman, CEO of Big Blue Bug Solutions, as the Rhode Island Small Business Person of the year.

Born and raised in the Ocean State, Goldman’s journey “embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation,” the SBA noted in a news release. “From his early days assisting with the family business, Brian displayed a knack for creativity and strategic thinking. At the age of 13, Brian devised a groundbreaking idea to unveil a new Big Blue Bug costume, capturing the imagination of the local community and garnering widespread media attention. This early success foreshadowed Brian’s future as a visionary leader.”

Goldman earned degrees in broadcast journalism and psychology from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. His career initially took him into the world of sports broadcasting, but in 2010, he returned to the business his grandfather, Leonard Yale Goldman, founded in 1935.

“Joining Big Blue Bug Solutions as a pest control technician, Brian quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his dedication and leadership abilities,” the release notes. “Within two years, he was promoted to supervisor, overseeing operations in Massachusetts. His relentless drive and commitment to excellence propelled him to the position of Chief Executive Officer in 2018. Under Brian’s leadership, the company underwent a transformation, guided by his ‘Big Blue Book’ strategy. This comprehensive vision united the team under a common goal while optimizing operational processes. The introduction of a data analytics department revolutionized decision-making, empowering every team member with key metrics aligned with the company’s vision.”

Goldman told Pest Management Professional that the SBA honors process has made for an incredible experience.

“We started with a congressional breakfast with members of the Small Business Association and Rhode Island politicians. Next, we went down to Washington D.C. for a couple days and had a ceremony with Cabinet Member and SBA Head Isabel Guzman. Finally, it wrapped up with a ceremony in Rhode Island where I was able to make a speech,” he continues. “It was an unbelievable honor. I was excited to speak to how this truly is a team award, and that I’m fortunate to represent our 100 employees.”
